July 2010. Photos of two insects ??? a scale and the larva of a lepidopteran – on coconut, from Bairiki, Kiribati. The scale insect infests the ???spear??? leaves and, because it produces a sticky exudate, prevents the leaves from opening. The larvae of the lepidopteran truncates the tips of young unopened leaves, and produces symptoms reminiscent of Oryctes, when the leaves open.
The scale insect was said to be a mealybug, which cannot be identified further from photographs, and there was no comment on the larvae.
