Invasive pests: regional and global

September 2001. A question from Niue on where to find information, guidelines, references, etc., regarding invasive species, either globally or regionally.

The following was sugggested as useful sources:

1. PIER – Pacific Island Ecosystems at Risk: http://www.hear.org/Pier/

2. Global Invasive Species Database at www.issg.org/database. It has a focus on invasive species that threaten biodiversity, but not exclusively. Each species account has biology, ecology, distribution, impact and management information, and is accompanied by references and the contact details of experts.

3. See Pacific Science Inter-Congress, Guam, June 1-6, 2001, at which there was an Alien Invasive Species Section and a number of papers were presented, including one on International conventions, national policy and legislative responsibility for alien invasive species in the Pacific Islands.

4. See also the FAO international standard for the risk analysis of invasive species, produced in cooperation with the Convention on Biological Diversity. ISPM no. 11 covers the PRA for a quarantine pest.
